Brotherhood & Competition: Lessons from the Streets of Compton

Whether in childhood games or lifelong challenges, building strong family bonds through sports creates an unbreakable foundation for character.
Growing up with three brothers taught me how to be a formidable competitor. I was raised alongside Harold, Alan, and Kenneth Patterson, with a loving mother, Admatine Patterson, who instilled in us the unshakable rule of always having each other’s backs. There was a penalty for not doing so—but that’s a conversation for another time, if you know what I mean.
Our childhood unfolded on the streets of Compton and Lynwood, California, where every day was an open invitation to compete. We challenged anyone to any sport, and when there weren’t enough games, we made up our own. One of those creations was “the curtain,” a game known only to the four of us. Along with that came murder ball, marbles, and late-night hide-and-seek—back when the streets felt safe, alive with laughter and the sound of sneakers hitting pavement.
The Proving Grounds of Lynwood and Compton
Baseball, though, was our crown jewel. Our backyard was the proving ground, where we played strikeout against our oldest brother. The unspoken belief was simple: if we could hit him, no pitcher at the park could strike us out.
Moving to Lynwood introduced us to another set of competitive kids, and the stakes grew higher. Even walking the streets alone was its own game—you had to be ready to think fast and run faster if you got chased from another block. It was all in good fun, but it deeply sharpened our instincts.
Unbroken Bonds and Life Lessons
Those intense childhood days shaped us into the confident men we are today. We realized that building strong family bonds through sports was not just about winning games, but about absorbing heavy life lessons:
Though those childhood days are long gone, the bond remains completely unbroken. I wouldn’t change a single thing about the streets we ran, the games we played, or the three men I proudly call not only my brothers, but my best friends.
